Two teenagers died and two adults were injured in a three-car accident on Interstate 95 near Ormond Beach late Thursday, July 26. Although police are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident, it serves as a reminder to all Florida residents of the need to educate teens about safe driving.

TaketheWheel.net is one resource that teens and adults alike can turn to for information regarding driving laws and regulations. The site, funded by the Florida Highway Patrol, also offers statistics and anecdotes that demonstrate the ramifications of not following safe driving guidelines.

TaketheWheel, with a mission to promote teen driving safety, allows Florida teens to tell their personal stories regarding accidents that often occurred after poor decisions. The site uses teenage jargon to help get the safe driving message across in peer-to-peer format.

Many organizations offer information online.

State Farm sponsors the Teen Driver Safety Website, offering free tools, tips, and resources to help teens avoid car accidents. State Farm notes that automobile accidents are the leading cause of death among teens, and through educating teens and their parents, the company hopes to encourage safe driving.

Through Road Trips, State Farm provides a tool for teens to track the minimum number of driving hours required to get a driver’s license – 50 hours for Florida drivers. Road Aware, another tool provided by State Farm, helps teens recognize road hazards. With Road Aware, teens can safely practice scenarios such as driving through residential areas and on city streets and highways.

AAA, through its Keys2Drive campaign, provides a driving knowledge quiz, sample driving test questions and information about the Florida driver’s licensing process. In addition, AAA provides a parent-teen agreement allowing families to set driving parameters in a non-challenging format.

Many more online resources are available to inform teens and their parents about safe driving campaigns and initiatives. Our Treasure Coast car accident lawyers urge parents to share this information with their teens and help educate them about the dangers inexperienced drivers can face. We also ask that you lead by example and practice safe, defensive driving.
