During the recent holiday season, Florida law enforcement joined the nationwide crackdown on drunk drivers by supporting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. The holiday season typically has more alcohol-related accidents than any other time of year. Unfortunately, according to a new study by the Centers for Disease Control(CDC), Americans do not limit their excessive drinking to the holiday season.

The CDC found “one in six U.S. adults binge drinks about four times a month,” with some adults binging an average of five or six times a month.

According to the CDC, many of these drinkers are dying or are fatally injuring others. The CDC also reports that, “most alcohol-impaired drivers binge drink.” According to the CDC, 80,000 deaths in the United States each year can be attributed to excessive drinking, which contributes to more than 54 different injuries and diseases, including car crashes and violence.

In its 2010 State Motor Vehicle Fatalities statistics, the NHTSA reports a total of 10,228 alcohol-impaired-driving fatalities across the country in 2010, and these accidents account for 31 percent of overall traffic deaths. Florida saw 660 alcohol-related highway deaths in 2010, down more than 100 from 2009.

The Associated Press believes the CDC results actually underestimate the number of binge drinkers in America. In its article, the AP reports “alcohol sales figures suggest people are buying a lot more alcohol than they say they are consuming.” The AP further added that about half of the alcohol consumed in each year is downed during binge drinking.

Our Florida car accident attorneys encourage those who drink alcohol to please not drink and drive. Do your part to protect others on the highway and designate a friend or family member to drive you home safely.
