The Florida Highway Patrol reports that seven people were injured in an automobile crash yesterday afternoon. A child was one of those seven, and he is seriously injured.
The accident occurred on US-1 and Rio Mar Road in Port St. Lucie in St. Lucie County.
The FHP states that a Toyota Celica driven by Javian Jon Whitby, 22, of Port St. Lucie, struck a Dodge Ram driven by Gilbert Collin, 61, of Fort Pierce. This caused all five in the Dodge to be injured. They were Collin himself, along with Solange Santard, Othinel Saint-Juste, Samuel Orelien, and three year old Jeremiah Jean-Juste, who was thrown from the vehicle and was seriously injured.
The occupants of the Celica suffered only minor injuries. The injured were Whitby and Valeria Torres.
The FHP says charges are pending. Witnesses stated that the Celica was traveling at a high rate of speed and may have been racing another vehicle, described as a older model Ford Mustang or Dodge Challenger with faded red paint.
The accident is still being investigated.
