In an official press release, the Florida Highway Patrol reports that two people were killed in a two vehicle head on car crash on Highway 98 in Okeechobee County this evening.
The dead are Walter Earl Stripling, 79, of Okeechobee and Ashley Ann Carter, 17, also of Okeechobee.
The accident occurred on US Highway 98, northwest of NW 58th Lane in Okeechobee.
The press release states that Stripling was traveling westbound in a Toyota Rav 4 on US Highway 98, northwest of NW 58th Lane. Carter was traveling eastbound on US Highway 98. Stripling failed to maintain his lane and crossed over the broken yellow painted center line and into the eastbound lane, directly into the path of Carter. Stripling’s vehicle struck the front left of Carter’s Ford Fusion.
After colliding, Stripling’s Toyota rotated counterclockwise and came to final rest in the east and westbound travel lanes facing southeast. Carter’s Ford rotated counterclockwise and traveled off the southern shoulder where it flipped over. It then came to rest on its roof, lying on the grass shoulder facing northwest. Stripling was pronounced dead at the scene. Carter was pronounced dead at Raulerson Hospital.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
