A two-vehicle crash killed a man from Vero Beach, injured another man from West Palm Beach, and shut down both directions of Florida’s Turnpike for two hours.

A 38-year-old man who was driving a 2008 Dodge Ram was killed when he drove his vehicle into the back of a tow truck. The incident occurred approximately nine miles north of Jupiter’s Indiantown Road exit.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, the tow truck driver was traveling northbound in the roadway’s inside lane when he supposedly attempted to make an illegal U-turn on the road’s southbound lanes. The Dodge Ram was unable to stop in time, causing the truck’s left-front side to strike the truck’s rear bumper, this resulting in the truck colliding with the center median.

Both drivers were immediately transported to a Fort Pierce hospital. The 38-year-old man died, while the tow truck driver was in serious condition.

Charges are pending and the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
