The Florida Highway Patrol reported today that motorcyclist William Jefferson Leavitt, 71, of Allen, Michigan, was killed this morning in a three way car crash in Okeechobee County.
The accident occurred on northbound US 441 at NW 208th Street in Okeechobee.
The FHP states that a Dodge Dakota driven by Okeechobee resident Rodney Robbins, 49, was traveling eastbound on NW 208th Street at the intersection of US 441. Leavitt was at the same time northbound on US 441, approaching the intersection of NW 208th Street. A third vehicle, a Ford pickup, driven by Stanley Weese, 66, of Gallatin, Tennessee, was southbound on US 441, also approaching the intersection.
Due to heavy fog in the area, the FHP reports that Robbins did not notice Leavitt’s motorcycle approaching. Robbins subsequently entered the northbound lane of US 441 in front of Leavitt, striking the motorcycle and killing Leavitt in the process. The pickup driven by Weese also struck Leavitt’s when his motorcycle was turned into the path of Weese.
The crash remains under investigation.
