In an official Florida Highway Patrol press release, the FHP reports that James Edward Ferrauilo was killed in a car crash on I-95 south of Palmetto Park Road in Palm Beach yesterday evening. The driver of the other car, Dawn M. Knowles-Gassett, was seriously injured.
Ferrauilo, 55, of Pompano Beach, was traveling northbound on I-95 approaching Palmetto Park Road in the inside center lane. Dawn M. Knowles-Gassett, 35, also of Pompano Beach, was traveling northbound on I-95 approaching Palmetto Park Road in the inside center lane ahead of Ferrauilo’s Nissan Pathfinder.
Knowles-Gassett made a complete stop due to stopped traffic ahead. For unknown reasons, Ferrauilo failed to make a complete stop. He swerved to the left to avoid a collision but was unable to. As a result, Ferrauilo’s vehicle struck Knowles-Gassett’s Ford Escape on the left rear. Both vehicles spun out of control. Knowles-Gassett’s car came to a final rest facing southwest in the right paved shoulder. Ferrauilo’s Pathfinder came to a final rest facing southeast in the inside center and center lane.
Ferrauilo’s interior compartment became engulfed in flame. Boca Raton Fire Department was on scene and was able to remove Ferrauilo from the vehicle prior to the interior compartment fire.
Ferrauilo was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Knowles-Gassett has serious injuries. Both victims were eventually transported to Delray Medical.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
