One person was killed and four injured in a fiery pileup on I-95 involving seven vehicles and freight cargo that exploded into flames.
The accident occurred in Martin County on November 29.
The blazing wreckage was a grim illustration of the devastation that can result from an automobile accident in South Florida.
According to Vero Beach News Weekly, the accident happened at mile marker 102, near the Kanner Highway overpass, at approximately 8:00 a.m. on Thursday.
Crew from the Martin County Fire Rescue who were clearing a previous emergency call on I-95 southbound lanes came upon the crash.
The accident involved a tractor-trailer and six other vehicles, with the tractor-trailer positioned partially on top of one of the vehicles. According to Martin County Fire Rescue’s Doug Killane, the individual who was killed in the crash was inside that particular vehicle.
The tractor-trailer, which was hauling non-hazardous cargo, caught on fire. Rescue personnel extricated two patients.
Two victims who sustained non-life threatening injuries were transported to Martin Memorial Health Systems in Port Salerno. Two other victims in serious condition were transported–one by helicopter–to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center in Fort Pierce. Five other victims refused medical treatment on the scene.
The deadly crash closed several lanes of I-95 for hours.
