Over the New Year’s weekend, Georgia state troopers arrested 321 people on charges of drunk driving. This marks a fairly significant increase over last year’s arrests, which totaled 262. As a result, at least one local reporter is asking if Metro Atlanta has a DUI problem.
Just a last week, a 45-year-old drunk driver plowed into and severely injured an Atlanta police officer working traffic near Northside Parkway and I-75. The driver has been charged with driving under the influence.
Another accident, which occurred last month, is still under investigation, though alcohol is believed to be involved. This accident happened on December 21 in Powder Springs. In it, a 49-year-old Marietta man drove his pick-up into a retaining wall in front of a residence. He died later at the hospital.
Drunk driving accidents are often some of the most violent, the most tragic. This is, in part, because the driver doesn’t usually take evasive action to avoid the accident. In other words, while someone who is stone-cold sober may swerve to miss an oncoming car, a drunk driver’s reaction time is so slowed that they wouldn’t attempt to move out of the way. These wrecks often happen at high speeds and without warning.
While the first step to reducing your risk of being hurt in a drunk driving accident is in choosing to not drive drunk, that’s only part of the equation. You can prevent your friends from driving drunk, make arrangements to not be out late at night when drunk drivers are on the road, and arrange ahead of time to have a designated driver if you plan to be out drinking.
Still, you are vulnerable to other people who aren’t so vigilant when it comes to drinking and driving.
Whether or not Atlanta has a “DUI problem” remains to be seen. Actually, all drunk driving or DWI accidents are indicative of a problem—no number is acceptable. And when a drunk driving accident causes injury or even death to an innocent victim, they are particularly tragic.
