Many intoxicated drivers believe they are capable of driving a vehicle without any problem and in turn convince other passengers of this as well. But when an impaired motorists gets behind the wheel, their reaction time and other functions are compromised, throw in speed and you have a recipe for disaster.
A tragic example of this is two men who recently lost their lives and another who sustained serious injuries after they lost control of their vehicle and crashed into a light pole. The fatal single-vehicle incident occurred at the intersection of Okeechobee Boulevard and Baywinds Drive around 6 a.m. on May 11.
The driver, 21, was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The 22-year-old passenger riding in the rear seat died at the scene. The 21-year-old front passenger was listed in critical condition at the hospital. All three male crash victims were from Royal Palm Beach. Investigators believe that alcohol and speed were factors in the fatal wreck.
DUI crashes don’t just affect the individuals involved, but they also affect the victims’ families and the community as well. A driver under the influence of alcohol who causes a road accident is considered negligent and can be held liable. Sadly, this is of little comfort to the individuals who suffer severe injuries or the loss of a family member in tragic DUI accidents such as this one.
Police suspect that alcohol and speed played a role in the fatal accident. These factors could be used as evidence of negligence, but neither has been proven as of yet. The injured passenger and the family of the killed passenger may seek the help of a Royal Palm Beach personal injury attorney to determine if they have valid grounds for making a claim.
