Distracted driving is a hot issue in Florida. Bills to ban cellphone use behind the wheel have repeatedly been defeated here. But the issue is front and center again, as the first-ever Distracted Driving Summit was held in Tampa this week.

The summit was sponsored by insurance company USAA, the Florida Department of Transportation, the Distraction Advocate Network, and Shriners Hospitals for Children. Officials from the local, state, and federal governments attended, as well as law enforcement officers and traffic safety experts.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood delivered the keynote address. LaHood expressed disappointment that Florida has failed to pass a law against distracted driving. LaHood also urged each driver to take personal responsibility to pay attention behind the wheel.

We echo his sentiments, and advise all Floridians to be responsible drivers.
