The Florida Highway Patrol reports this afternoon that Robert Griffth Welch Jr., 70, of Fort Pierce was killed in a truck versus big-rig accident at 10:30 this morning.
Authorities say Welch was driving a Ford F-250 pickup northbound on County Road 615 when he came to the intersection of 615 and 77th Street. At that point he made a U-turn back onto CR-615, failing to stop before entering the roadway. A truck and trailer rig driven by Stevan Louis Holmes, 57, of Fort Pierce, was unable to avoid the pickup and collided with that vehicle.
Welch was transported to Indian River Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Holmes suffered no injuries.
The accident remains under investigation.
We at DeBerard Injury Attorney commiserate with all those affected by this tragedy. Big-rig trucks need longer stopping times to brake than passenger cars or trucks. Their drivers owe a duty of care commensurate with their heavier trucks and loads. Negligence in an accident may lead to a wrongful death suit.
