The Florida Highway Patrol reports that 60 year old Douglas Irvin Schwalm from West Palm Beach, Florida was killed in a car versus bicycle crash that occurred on Monday, September 26, 2016 on State Road 70 and NE 70th Avenue in Okeechobee County.

Schwalm was bicycling eastbound on the south paved shoulder of SR-70 at 6:56 AM. Harold Browning of Venus was traveling east on SR-70 approaching NE 70th Ave. in a Ford 150 pickup truck.

The south paved shoulder came to an end and bicyclist Schwalm entered the eastbound lane of SR-70 in front of the pickup. At that point Browning’s pickup hit Schwalm who was thrown into the westbound lane.

A still unidentified tractor trailer was traveling westbound on SR-70 at the same time. It struck Schwalm and his bicycle. The big rig left the scene of the crash. The FHP is still looking for this vehicle.

The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

We at DeBerard Injury Attorney wish the best for all those impacted by this tragedy. Motorists owe a duty to bicyclists to be vigilant of their presence and to accord them a right to the road. A claim for wrongful death may exist if a fatality arises from the negligence of another.
