An official Florida Highway Patrol report states that Lake Park resident Lawrence Melvin Alkema, 68, was killed early this morning after his 1996 Ford Ranger was struck by a 2015 Jaguar XF which fled the scene.

The accident occurred on northbound I-95 near Mile Marker 93 in Martin County.

The FHP press release reports Alkema’s vehicle was traveling northbound on I-95 in his Ford Ranger when it was struck from behind by a Jaguar owned by Jack Edward Brown. The collision caused Alkema’s vehicle to veer off the roadway and overturn. Alkema was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Jaguar left the location of the accident, becoming inoperable shortly thereafter. The driver fled on foot.

Jack Edward Brown was subsequently located and arrested by FHP investigators. He has retained an attorney.
