Brian Smith Killed in Car Crash on State Route 91 in St. Lucie County

An official Florida Highway Patrol Report states Brian J. Smith, II, was killed yesterday evening when his car collided with a flatbed tow truck.

Smith, 26, of Orlando, was traveling northbound on State Road 91 near Mile Marker 171.5 in St. Lucie County. He was in the inside lane, a short distance behind a flatbed tow truck driven by Christopher Diaz.

The wrecker slowed down, as it was attempting to retrieve a vehicle from a prior crash that was located in the center grass median. As the truck was slowing to a stop, partially on the inside shoulder and inside travel lane with its amber emergency overhead lights activated., Smith failed to notice the wrecker slowing and struck the rear of of the vehicle. Smith was pronounced deceased on scene. Diaz suffered minor injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
