The Sun Sentinel reports that eight school students were hospitalized and another 2o treated after a pyrotechnic exhibition went wrong at a Delray Beach high school pep rally today.

Most seriously wounded was the entertainer who caught on fire, Ricky Charles, 53, of Miramar, who was rushed to Delray Medical Center. He is now reported to be in good condition and even talking about the accident.

School children were treated for a variety of maladies, most of them related to smoke inhalation.

What is unknown at this time is why fire and pyrotechnics were allowed in the building at Atlantic Community High School. Spokeswoman Kathy Burstein for the Palm Beach County School District says such displays are a direct violation of district policy. The incident remains under investigation.
