The Florida Highway Patrol reports that Roderick Gene Nielson, 51, of Okeechobee, was killed yesterday afternoon when he was struck by a 2002 Dodge pickup driven by Carmen Espada, 32, also of Okeechobee. The accident occurred on the shoulder of State Road 70, just west of State Road 710 in Okeechobee County.

Nielson was trying to shut the back door of a 2002 Mack truck which had swung open. The tractor trailer was at that time parked on the north shoulder of State Road 70. Nielson was standing in the outside lane when Espada’s vehicle came by. Espada’s truck struck the Mack truck’s open rear door, slamming the door on Nielson and then throwing him into the path of the pickup. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
