The Florida Highway Patrol and WPTV.com reports that Michael Franklin Gearde and David Wayne Faulk were killed early this morning when their car was struck by a Florida East Coast Railway train. The accident occurred at the intersection of Salerno Road and the Dixie Highway Railroad Crossing in Port Salerno in Martin county.

The FHP says Gearde, 51, of Hobe Sound, and his passenger, Faulk, 40, of Port Salerno, died when Gearde drove a Dodge Dakota around the railroad crossing gates at the intersection. The FHP states that red lights at the intersection activated and the gate’s crossing bells sounded. It is unknown why the men drove around the gates.

They were pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation and toxicology reports are pending. We will have more information here if it becomes available.
