The Florida Highway Patrol reports that Dawn Axiotis, 40, of Vero Beach, was killed this afternoon when a Toyota Camry driven by Peter Peterson, 83, also of Vero Beach, ran her over.

Axiotis was walking southbound on the grassy shoulder of CR-605 (The Old Dixie Highway) near 12th Street SW in Vero Beach. For reasons not yet clear, Peterson’s vehicle went off the roadway and struck Axiotis.

Axiotis was pronounced dead at the Lawnwood Medical Center where she had been transported. Peterson was not injured. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor.

The cause of this accident remains under investigation. We will have more details when they become available.
