Hit-and-run crashes have been on the rise in Florida. The latest report from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reveals that the state’s annual number of hit-and-run incidents increased by 23% from 2012 to 2014. In 2014 alone, one in four auto accidents in the state – that’s 84,252 accidents – involved a hit-and-run. Worse, hit-and-run fatalities also rose to a total of 184 in the same year.

Around South Florida, at least two incidents have already been reported just this month where drivers fled the scene of accidents. One of these incidents occurred last Tuesday in Lake Worth and seriously injured one man.

According to a report from Boynton Beach police and a witness account, the crash happened after a woman, tailgated a moped and was upset by the bike’s slow speed. She drove her car closer and ultimately struck the bike. This caused the moped driver, 53-year-old male, to lose control of the bike and fall off.

The victim sustained serious injuries and had to be put on life support. Meanwhile, the driver was arrested sometime after 6 p.m. on the same day as the crash, and is being held at the Palm Beach County Jail with bail set at $20,000. The driver is now charged with leaving a crash scene involving serious bodily injuries.

The witness, who was passenger during the incident, said that she told the driver to back off from the moped but the car driver instead intentionally got closer to it. Right after the crash, the driver did not stop at the accident site and continued driving.

Police later located her at a friend’s Lake Worth house, where they found her with red, glassy eyes and slurred speech. She was sent to a hospital for medical treatment.

A hit-and-run incident may involve both a civil and a criminal case. Hit-and-run victims who have suffered serious injuries should know the courses of action they can take in order to achieve justice and compensation for their suffering. It is best to consult an experienced accident attorney for legal guidance and representation.
