Two days after Christmas, at least four individuals were injured in a boating accident on the Loxahatchee River.

According to the Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, the boat crashed into the Loxahatchee River Sandbar, which is a popular spot among boaters that is west of the Alternate A1A bridge. The accident occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m.

There were nine boaters were on board. According to District Chief Samuel Eaton, two of the boaters were transported to a local hospital – one of them for serious injuries. Two other boaters went to the hospital on their own to seek medical attention for minor injuries.

A private boat transferred a number of the injured individuals to a private dock located at the end of Dolphin Drive, which is north of Center Street and west of Alternate A1A.

The sandbar, known to some as Coney Island, is a famous attraction among boaters and their families for its views of the river, the Jupiter Lighthouse, and the bridges across the Intracoastal. The sandbar is most popular during times of low tide, although these are also times when water channels closest to it are most shallow, which make conditions difficult and even dangerous for boaters.

The National Weather Service states that the crash took place roughly three hours after the inlet’s low tide. The speed of the boat at the time of the accident remains unclear.

Two men who witnessed the incident assisted two young girls, an older man, and a slightly older woman by taking them to a nearby home in order to call for help. The witnesses also state that group appeared to be riding a rental boat, although it was unclear whether or not those aboard were from around the area.

If you or a loved one has sustained injuries in a boat crash, it’s recommended you consult with an experienced boat accident attorney to ensure your rights are protected and you get the appropriate compensation for your injuries.
