Traffic was dangerously backed up 20 miles in both directions on I-75 as cattle wandered onto the highway following a January 5 truck crash.

A cattle truck had a tire blowout, struck a guardrail and smashed into a tree. Escaped cows began walking onto the roadway.

The truck’s driver had to be taken to the hospital and a passenger was slightly hurt. One cow acted aggressively, we had to be shot and killed. No other injuries were reported.

More than 230,000 people were involved in Florida car wrecks in 2010, according to the state highway department, with 151,773 injured and 1,789 killed.

Each one of those 230,000 motor vehicle accidents had a unique set of facts and circumstances.

According to the Independent Florida Alligator, there were several hours of traffic delay on Saturday afternoon due to a semi-truck that was transporting cattle collided on Interstate 75, south of West Newberry Road.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol accident report, a 20-year-old resident from Okeechobee named Travis Carr was heading southbound in his semi-truck when one of the truck’s front wheels blew out.

The truck veered right and struck a guardrail, according to the report. It continued south over the road shoulder until it crashed into a tree line near Mile Marker 387. FHP officers and Alachua County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded.

They redirected highway traffic while emergency medical personnel worked to clear the road. Officials also chased after several cows that escaped from the truck.

The backup of northbound I-75 traffic reached 9 miles south from the site of the crash to Payne’s Prairie. Southbound traffic stretched 12 miles.

By late afternoon, officials had rounded up the cattle and reopened all southbound lanes. All cows were accounted for except one that got unruly and had to be put down, according to reports.
