I-75 Rollover Claims Woman’s Life

A tragic Florida interstate wreck shows how child car seats can save lives.

On November 12, a woman from Port St. Lucie was killed and two passengers were injured when the truck she was driving struck a guardrail and overturned on I-75. Her young granddaughter – who was securely strapped in a safety seat – sustained only minor injuries.

According to Ocala.com, Florida Highway Patrol reported that Alexandra Parra was driving her 2004 Ford F-250 on I-75 southbound near Reddick just after 5:00 a.m. when she suddenly just lost control of the vehicle.

The truck went onto the median, hit the guardrail and then rolled, ejecting 22-year-old Brandy Buice, and partially ejecting 34-year-old Michael Ewing. Parra was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other two passengers sustained non-life threatening injuries.

According to FHP Trooper Bharat Dersaud, 3-year-old Sarafina Beathry was in a car seat and only suffered minor injuries.

All four victims in the accidet were from Port St. Lucie.

Buice is the mother of Sarafina, Ewing is Buice’s friend, and Parra was Buice’s mother.

The crash is still under investigation. However, reports show that speed was not thought to be a factor, but the truck had oversized tires and was raised above the manufacturer’s specifications.

State statistics reveal that Floridians were involved in 231,647 car wrecks in 2010. Of these collisions, 151,773 caused personal injuries and 1,789 resulted in death.
